  • The Color of Money - Artist John W. Jones comes to CFL

Artist John W. Jones will speak to K-4 and the Academy on Friday, February 24, 2012. Confederate Currency: The Color of Money investigates the importance of slavery in the economy of the South. Artist John W. Jones has researched and documented over 126 images of slavery that were depicted on Confederate and Southern States money. It is a poignant, provocative and compelling centerpiece for engaging such issues as slavery, reparations, racial profiling, racial healing, institutional racism and discrimination.

The juxtaposition of the framed Confederate Currencies with the acrylic paintings inspired by the slave images on the currencies makes a very powerful statement on the contribution of enslaved Africans to the American economy. In these paintings, as John says, “history informs art, which in turn artfully reveals more history”.

  • THANK YOU PARENTS for your donations!

PARENTS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS - We need your help for our new Visual Arts Program!
Center for Learning, Inc. and the Tapp's Arts Center have partnered to provide an Arts Program to CFL students and the community!
The new CFL Arts Studio will be located in the Tapp's Arts Center, 1644 Main St., on the basement level next to Wink magazine (fashion) and the Fountain Room at Tapp's (restaurant).

On March 1, 2012 (First Thurdays on Main Street), all parents and students are invited to the Grand Opening of the CFL Arts Studio at Tapp's during Youth Art Month from 5pm-9pm. Youth art from numerous schools will be on display throughout the Tapp's Art Gallery, and CFL and Tapp's will announce their collaboration and unveil the new studio at 7pm. Several CFL classes' art will be on exhibit in our studio and possibly the gallery. We encourage our parents and families to come out and support all the youth of the Midlands and South Carolina.

We are in need of financial donations for matching grants to purchase art supplies or in-kind donations of art supplies (canvas, paints, brushes, clay, wood, etc.). To assist or for more information, contact Ms. Niblock at (803) 254-0068 or Frederick Hogsett, II at (803) 269-4983.
